I am doing energy consulting work for a chemical company The customer has awater tank that is about 14 miles and 800 feet higher than the lower tanks. We estimate that with 30 inch pipe they can install a 750 kW water turbine.With 24 inch about 500 kW. This project will use state (CPUC/SGIP) incentivesfor the turbine ($1,200/kW) and additionally for storage ($1,800/kW). That's$3,000/kW and for a 750 kW turbine $2,250,000. We estimate (Hoop stress) that just under 1/2 inch will suffice for 30 inchpipe where is it subject to 800 feet of head. At the top it could be less.About half the height is lost in the first 4 miles. This could be thinnerwalled. Roughly the last 4 miles are subject to 700-800 feet of head and wouldrequire 1/2 inch thickness if our calculations are correct. The application is to recover/store water energy. What we'd like ideally is rough costs for 24 and 30 inch pipe with appropriatewall thickness for varying pressure. Stress calculations will be performed bythe Generl Contractor that is working for the Chemical company.
